FOLLOWING THE PATHS OF KNIGHTS AND PEASANTS OF ZAGORJE...

Hrvatsko zagorje, green oasis in the northwest part of  Croatia, in the 18th century was the centre of Croatian social life and favourite residency of the aristocracy who lived there on their estates and in feudal castles („burg“).  Precious souvenirs of the life of these times are left to us by noble families as Oršić, Drašković or Erdödy familiy... Potepuh invites you on a journey through the history and culture of the ancient times, and introduces you rich cultural lendscape of Zagorje region... We take you on a visit to the  aristocrats and knights of medieval times... we present you the history of  Zagorje  serfdom..

If start from Zagreb, the road takes us through a vivid landscape of warm colours of Zagorje. Our 'time- travel' begins in Stubica valley, memorial place of the great Peasants' Revolt dating from year 1573. You will see the statue to Matija Gubec rebels' leader, anointed as „Peasent King“ – the work art of „grand master“ of sculpture Antun Augustinčić - standing next to the Oršić castle, residency of the aristocrat family Oršić, one of the leading families of the Croatian nobility.

In the baroque edifice of ancient medieval „burg“ today is Peasants' Revolt Museum which brings you back to the feudal society and glorious chivalrous history of Hrvatsko zagorje. The „Knights of the Golden Chalice“ will open you the doors of the castle and take you into the ancient history... In the garden of the castle Oršić, the passage to the late middle-age is opened...authentic presentation of the life in this period is in front of you: fencing, salamanders, archers... ancient forgotten world.

After the „chivalrous welcome“, professional museum curator will lead you through the museum's permanent exhibition and take you even more into the feudal history of Stubica region and great Peasants' Revolt of year 1573. You will discover all about the courage of Zagorje
serfs and their revolt as universal question of freedom.

We will end your trip by introducing you the gastronomy history of the region. We take you to the idyllic valley of Zagorje landscape, untouched nook of nature, separated from the „outside world“, by gorgeous slopes of Medvednica. With the well-kept gastronomy secrets of Pavica's cuisine made of  natural ingredients of the area, you will experience truly beauty and tastes of Zagorje region...
